A chance for KPW to help one of its own in a moment of need

For more than 15 years, Rocky Morrison has been a fixture at King Philip Walpole Youth Hockey — as a long-time coach, board of directors member and past president, Rocky has positively impacted hundreds of youth hockey players and their families with his kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity on and off the ice, and his son, James, was a long-time KPW alumni who went on to play at and graduate from Walpole High School.

Now Rocky and his family need some kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity in return, providing the KPW community an opportunity to help in their moment of need.

Rocky's wife of 33 years, Mary, is fighting for her life against a rare autoimmune inflammatory disease that has impacted her lung function. Her diagnosis came as a shock, as there is no family history of lung disease. Mary has required the assistance of supplemental oxygen to help her breathe since she was diagnosed. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is critical to her survival.

The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Mary faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Friends of the Morrison family have set up a donation site so family, friends and the community can help with the considerable costs they're about to confront as they prepare for the double-lung transplant critical to Mary's future.

We encourage the KPW community to visit http://give.transplants.org/site/TR?px=1034987&fr_id=1040&pg=personal to learn more about their cause and to donate.

KPW full-season boys and girls 18U teams

King Philip Walpole Youth Hockey is planning for full-season boys and girls 18U teams, and we are looking to gauge potential interest in both teams. Players do not have to have played for KPW before, can be residents of any town and we expect the programs to begin around Dec. 1.

The boys team will play roughly 18 games in the South Shore Conference 18U full-season conference, and will cost $339 (plus $75 for game and practice jerseys and socks for any new players).

The girls team will follow a similar approach to last season, with a mix of practices, skills sessions and scrimmage games depending on the availability of potential opponents, and also will cost $339 (plus $35 for practice jerset and socks).

If you are interested in playing for either the boys or girls team, please reach out to either 18U director Brian McDevitt (BRIAN.MCDEVITT@ca.com) or girls director Ronnie O'Shea (ronnieoshea@gmail.com) and let them know whether you're definitely or possibly interested (pending, say, whether your child makes a varsity team).
